Welcome to the Artwork of Jill Marie Bear

Jill Marie is a multidisciplinary artist who weaves together themes of animism, dreamwork, ritual and ancestral remembrance to create spaces of beauty and curiosity, while reconnecting threads of belonging. Her work emerges from deep engagement with place, lineage, and the unseen forces that shape our world.

Born and raised on the unceded territories of the Ayajuthum-speaking peoples -the ɬəʔamɛn (Tla’amin), χʷɛmaɬkʷu (Homalco), ƛoʔos (Klahoose) and K’ómoks Nations - her worldview has been shaped by the ecological, cultural, and spiritual presence of these lands and continues to learn from the enduring relational intelligence of Indigenous knowledge systems - instructions on how to live in balance since time immemorial.

A painter and writer, she is rooted in listening to landscapes, ancestral wisdom, and the quiet somatic intelligence carried within the body. This practice emerged through a life-altering illness that forged an inward journey, unlearning dominant narratives and behaviours she once inhabited and is now journeying towards cultivating practices that are reciprocal, embodied ways of being.

In recent years, she has turned toward her own lineages, stories once entangled in colonial myths of discovery and dominion, disembodiment or completely forgotten.

While tracing her Northern European (English/Norwegian/Scottish/Welsh/Irish/French/German) settler ancestry and uncovering her hidden Annishinabek roots in the Great Lakes, she wrestles with the Canadian psyche shaped by colonization and silenced truths.

She has found that these stories shape the maps we carry within. Internalized frameworks that live in the body, informing perception, identity, and our ways of relating to ourselves, to others, and to the world.

With over two decades of experience guiding in wilderness settings and surveying coastal forest ecosystems, her advocacy with qathetoldgrowth.ca has further deepened her understanding of the need for ecological relationships, cultural repair, and challenging dominant narratives as ways of bearing witness to the collective crisis we find ourselves in - while opening new pathways into the sustained, relational work required of us.

These threads converge in her art, which explores belonging, cultural memory, and the spiritual ecology of kinship. Aligned with a broader movement to renew animist worldviews, she honours rivers, trees, and unseen intelligences as sentient kin. She learns from elders, ecologists, ceremonial communities, somatic practitioners, and grief tenders, alongside plants, animals, fungi, elemental beings, and ancestral kin, on how to listen, grieve, and speak from deeper truths. Tending to the necessary work of dismantling systems of control and reorienting toward reciprocity and relational care.
